Description

This is another piece that came out of the collaborative agricultural steel project. Raw material for this piece was reclaimed antique farm equipment from my grandparents’ farm. The levered folding design is based on a very old style of pocket knife which was usually mounted in a solid wood, antler, or bone handle. This piece is all steel, however, and has the weight to go with it!

This would make an excellent desktop sculpture, third object, or conversation piece as its heft, finish, and lines invite handling and inspection. It will also stand upright open, closed, or in the (bird-like) mid-pivot positions. Made from lower carbon steel, this blade is not sharp and therefore one of the Serious Letter Opener series.

The blade was forged from a reclaimed agricultural rod and finished mainly by hand using files. The rivet is steel and the spacers are copper. The handle was hot split and forged from a piece of agricultural angle iron and was also finished by hand filing. The blade is 3″ long and the overall length is about 6.75″.
